The trouble with fleas, ticks and lice...

Your pets aren’t the only ones at risk of fleas and parasites, your family is at risk too!

Fleas feed on blood, which make young or frail pets extremely vulnerable to infection. Fleas can also spread diseases such as ‘cat scratch fever’ or Bartonella to both cats and dogs, and can transmit parasites like tapeworms to both animals and humans.

Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease and other parasite infections to dogs, cats and humans. Left untreated, Lyme Disease can cause mild to severe arthritis in dogs and cats can have difficulty breathing. In humans, the disease can also affect the nervous system.

A Lice infestation can lead to anaemia (a lack of red blood cells), irritation, mild to severe dermatitis and generally cause poor health in both pets and humans.

Top tips to help eradicate fleas and prevent an infestation:

1. Use FleaScreen Combo every 4 weeks.

2. Thoroughly vacuum carpets, particularly in dark areas such as under furniture and beneath cushions.

3. Wash your pets’ bedding regularly.

4. Make sure all household pets are treated with a suitable licensed product.

5. We also advise to regularly deworm your pet - at least every 3 months!

Sarah Davis recommends FleaScreen Combo

My three kids adore our cats Charlie and Simon and our Border Terrier Figo. They’re always tearing around the house or cuddling up with them. I worry about getting fleas in the house so I’ve been using FleaScreen Combo every month and so far we are flea-free! I find the applicator really easy to use as Figo is a bit of a fidget and the cats…well sometimes it may take two attempts, but I can put the cap back onto the applicator until I get the perfect moment to apply it!

I have two Labradors called Bitsy and Bobbie who love to run in long grass and go for swims in a nearby lake. They get dosed with FleaScreen Combo every month for fleas and ticks, I’ve found it easy to apply and so far they have been flea and tick free!

VetBox began including FleaScreen Combo into our subscribers monthly deliveries as soon as it was launched. For the first time we were able to send a treatment which until then had only been available with a written prescription from a vet.

Flea-quently Asked Questions

Can I see fleas?

Yes, however, fleas can move very quickly through fur, making them hard to spot. It’s usually easier to find evidence of fleas than the fleas themselves, such as flea dirt in your pet's coat.

How can I get rid of a flea infestation?

Firstly, you need to make sure that all pets in the household have been treated with a suitable product that is licensed for that animal. FleaScreen Combo has been licensed for the treatment and prevention of fleas in dogs and cats only and must not be used on other species such as rabbits for example. It is also important to allow your treated dog or cat free access around the home otherwise any newly emerging fleas are likely to bite you instead! Good hygiene is also important, therefore thoroughly wash your pet's bedding and vacuum carpets and furniture, particularly dark areas where flea larvae love to migrate. Using a suitable household 'flea' spray can also help speed up the process but unfortunately there is no immediate fix and it will take some time for all the flea life stages in the environment to die out.

Can fleas harm my pet?

Flea bites can cause pets to feel itchy so they will start to scratch and this can make their skin sore. Some animals develop an allergy to flea saliva called Flea Allergic Dermatitis and this can make them really uncomfortable and cause other health problems. In small dogs, puppies, kittens and older or sick animals a severe infestation can cause anaemia which can occasionally be fatal. Fleas also spread tapeworms, another parasite which can infect your pet skin.

How can I get rid of a flea infestation?

Can fleas harm humans?

Flea bites in humans can become infected and may induce an allergic reaction. In some cases certain diseases can be transmitted by flea bites such as typhus and cat scratch fever.

Can fleas live on humans?

Yes, but humans are not their preferred hosts. Cat and dog fleas may occasionally feed on humans, but will leave and rarely infest humans.

How far can fleas jump?

Fleas are natural born jumpers! With long, powerful hind legs, they can jump as high as 18cm and as far as 33cm. Considering the average flea is only around 1.5mm in size, this is an incredible achievement, but all the more reason to protect your pets and yourself against these tiny parasites.
